Nikolai is a Danish-Greenlandic contemporary painter based in Zurich, working primarily in acrylic and mixed media. Born in Denmark and grew up in Nuuk, Greenland, his practice is shaped by a life lived across places: Denmark, Greenland, France, the Philippines, and now Switzerland. At its core, his work investigates migration, in its human, economic, and even digital forms, along with the memory, identity, and contrast that come with moving between places and never fully settling into one.

His paintings often take the form of imaginary maps, built from rough lines and borders that suggest a cartography of the mind rather than any real geography. He returns repeatedly to the image of the glacial erratic, a boulder carried across a landscape over millennia and left standing out in unfamiliar terrain, as a way of thinking about what it means to belong somewhere while still holding onto one’s own shape. This interest in geology and land recurs across his work: in a Burgundy residency exploring the layered soils of terroir and their unexpected echoes in geopolitics, and in a Golden Cargo Gallery series inspired by boulders as markers of memory and displacement. Across these bodies of work, Nikolai holds a consistent tension between the organic and the structured, and treats each series as a marker along an ongoing search rather than a finished statement.

Nikolai studied music in Denmark, economics, and art management in Paris, before spending seven years immersed in the Manila art scene from 2015 to 2022, where he held a solo exhibition in 2016 and worked with Art Basel Hong Kong and international galleries. His work has since been shown at Golden Cargo Gallery in Quezon City, and he has undertaken self-initiated residencies in Porto (2024) and Burgundy (2025). He has lived and painted in Zurich since 2022.
