Solo show at Golden Cargo Gallery in Quezon City, Philippines, October 1 to 15, 2021. I was invited to create 10 artworks sized to fit a safety box in a vault. The gallery is a former bank vault, conceptually turned into an art space, where the works are stored like precious objects kept for safekeeping.
I submitted my series Migrating Boulders, a set of A4 sized mixed media works made with watercolour, acrylic, and ink on cotton paper. The title comes from my lasting fascination with glacial erratics, large boulders carried across a landscape over millions of years and left behind in new locations, where they stand out because of their shape.
These boulders make me think about migration and about settling in new places. About how one can become part of a landscape while still keeping one’s own character and identity. You can belong to something and still be different, and that difference is what makes you interesting. The boulders also give me a sense of solidity, a foundation, a reminder of coming from somewhere where life is slow and quiet, yet comforting. I remember the boulders from my upbringing in Greenland. Their shape stays with me as a memory of something I treasure.
